Deuteronomy Chapter 20

Omniscient – You know everything.  You know  what the officers will speak ot the people and why they say it.  You know Your people will be afraid and fainthearted.  You know what war is for.  You know the past and the future.  You know Your WORD.  You know me.  You know my heart and my mind.  You are all-knowing.

Omnipotent- You can do anything.  You have Your people go out to battle.  You put the words in the priests and the officers what they should say.  You put into a man’s heart to be afraid and fainthearted.  You have him depart and return to his house.  If 22,000 people leave and only 10,000 remain and You have them win the battle it is because of Your Purpose.  You make the city that agrees to make peace and the city that does not to besiege it.  You destroy whomever You want.  You make me understand if You just wanted to.  You are all-powerful.

Omnipresent – You are everywhere.  You are in every nation.  You are in every city.  You are in Your WORD.  You are here with me. You are in my heart and in my mind.  You are all-present.

Eternal – You are the cause of time.  You are when and now.  You are today.  You are then.  You are a long time.  You are forever and ever.  You are the past and the future.  You are time.

Immutable – You do not change.  The officers shall say, “Who is the man that is afraid and fainthearted?  Let him depart and return to his house, so that he might not make his brothers’ hearts melt like his heart.”  You want to teach me not to do the dateable things so that I would sin against You My God.  You will never be made to change.

Self – Existent – You exist by Yourself.  You will exist even when Your creation does not.  You choose.  You decide.  You make up fear’s existence and the fainthearted’s existence.  You make up the priests’ existence and the officer’s existence.  You make up the nation’s existence and it’s cities existence.  You make up Your word’s existence and my existence.  You decide who lives and who dies.  It is Your creation who needs You in order to exist.

Self-Sufficient – You do not need any of Your creation to bring about Your will or Your purpose.  You choose to use fear, the fainthearted, the priests’, the officers, the nations, the cities, Your WORD, Moses, and me because it is Your good pleasure, not Your need, that governs Your choice.

Infinite – There are no limits or bounds to Your person or dominion.  You are a long time, even forever.  You are limitless.

Transcendent – You are apart from Your creation.  You teach me about You.  You teach me about going into battle and times of war.  You teach me to not be afraid and fainthearted.  You teach me when Israel, Your chosen, me (?) approach a city to fight against it and I shall offer it terms of peace.  You teach me when Israel, Your chosen, me (?), besiege a city a long time to make war against it in order to capture it, to not destroy its tress by swinging an axe against them.  You teach me Your graciousness.  In Exodus 34:6, 7 – You forgive iniquity, transgression, and sin, yet You will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.

What does fainthearted mean?  1)  cowardly; timid; shy.

Sovereign – You have Israel, Your people, go out to battle, to make war.  You have people go back to their homes.  You have those who You want to approach a city to fight against it.  You give the terms of peace.  You make the city forced labor and to serve Israel and the city to destroy.  You make the fruit trees for food and the trees for constructing siege works.  You are in complete control and You are doing Your foreknown plan!

Holy – You are a morally excellent, perfect being.   You separate battles and nations for Your purpose.  You separate the priests and the officers for Your purpose.  You separate me by Your truth through Your Son for Your purpose.

Gracious – Times of war are Your favor because You are with them and You go before them.  You give the city into Israel’s hand.  You give them spoil.  You give it to them as an inheritance.  You give them fruit trees in the midst of the battle.  You forgive sin and iniquity and You punish the guilty.

Merciful – You show Your people Your compassion by destroying the nations so that they may not teach Israel to do according to all their detestable things which they have done for their gods.  You keep them from sinning against You.

Righteous – You are always right.  You teach the right way.  Battle and destroying the nations and not cutting down fruit trees are Your Way.

Longsuffering - You are patient with the sons of Israel and slow to anger.

Just – You reward the unrighteous, atone for sin, and punish the guilty.  Cities that accept terms of peace with Israel and opens to Israel will become Israel’s forced labor and serve them.  Cities that don’t are completely destroyed.

Loving – You love the sons of Israel and You take care of them.  You give them land and cities and clothes and food to eat.  You give them what they need.

Good – You have Israel go out to battle against their enemies.  You have them approach a city to fight against it.  You give the fruit trees to eat from.  You are there.

Wise – Your wisdom causes You to do the things You do to teach me about Yourself and Your heavenly throne.  Your wisdom is higher than my wisdom.  Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts.

Truthful - You always speak the truth.  You have Moses speak to Israel all that You said to him.  Moses has the officers speak to Israel.  You have the priest speak to Your people.  Your WORD is Your is Your reality.  You do what You want and You say what You mean.

Faithful – You always do what You promise. You have nations serve Your people and destroy those who do not.  You have Israel utterly destroy the Hittite and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite.  You are Israel’s God and they are Your people.

Wrathful - You utterly destroy all unrighteousness.  In the cities of these people that You my God is giving Israel as an inheritance, Israel shall not leave alive anything that breathes.

Jealous – You will not share Your people who are rightly and morally Yours with any other creature.

Incomprehensible – Why do You have Israel go out to battle?  Isn’t that murder?  What about Thou shallt not murder?  Isn’t that bloodguiltiness?  What about turn the other cheek and if he wants your coat give him Your shirt also?  And just as you want people to treat you, treat them the same way?  Why do You have the priests say do not fear or be fainthearted?  How does Your People know You go before them and when You fight for them and when not?

How do I not be afraid or fainthearted My LORD?  What is this chapter saying?  What does it mean?  What am I supposed to do?
