Deuteronomy Chapter 32

Omniscient – You know everything.  You know Your heavens and Your earth.  You know who ‘they’ is and who ‘our’ is.  You remember the days of old.  You consider the years of all generations.  You know Jeshurun.  You know he will forsake You and make You jealous.  You know You will be provoked o anger. You know the demons.  You know what they are doing.  You know You will hide Your face.  You know what their end will be.  You know they are a perverse generation.  You know what You will do.  You know Your anger.  You know what You would have said.  You know what they would say.  You know them.  You know Your enemies and Your adversaries.  You know what You have done and what You will do.  You know Your vengeance and Your retribution.  You know Moses and Joshua.  You know Your WORD.  You know me.  You know my heart and my mind.  You are all-knowing.

Omnipotent- You can do anything.  You have bought Your people (and me My LORD?).  You made me and established me.  You set the boundaries of the people.  You encircle Jacob, Your people, and care for him and guard him as the pupil of Your eye.  You are like an eagle that stirs up its nest that hovers over its young, You spread Your wings and catch them, You carry them on Your pinions.  You guided Jacob, your people.  You made him ride on the high places of the earth, and he ate the produce of the field; and You made him suck honey from the rock, and oil from the flinty rock.  You heap misfortunes on them; You will use Your arrows on the.  They shall be wasted by famine, and consumed by plague and bitter destruction; and the teeth of beasts I will send upon them, with the venom of crawling things of the dust.  You can change my heart.  You make me understand if You just wanted to.

Omnipresent – You are everywhere.  You are in the heavens and on the earth.  You are in the desert land and in the wilderness.  You are of the earth and of the field and of Bashan, and of Sheol.  You are in the land, at the Jordan, and at Mount Nebo.  You are in the land of Canaan and in the land of Moab.  You are in the mist the sons of Israel.  You are in Your WORD.  You are here with me. You are in my heart and in my mind.  You are all-present.

Eternal – You are time.  You are when and them.  You are lately and the day of their calamity.  You are days and the very same day.  You are now and forever.  You are the cause of time.

Immutable – You will make them jealous with those who are not a people.  You are doing to them to make them feel what You feel.  You make me understand how I hurt You.  You will never be made to change.

Self – Existent – You exist by Yourself.  You choose.  You decide.  You make up Moses’ existence and Joshua’s existence. You make up the nations’ existence.  You make up Israel’s existence.  You make up Your Word’s existence.  You make up my existence.  You choose who lives and who dies.  You will exist even when Your creation does not.

Self-Sufficient – You do not need any of Your creation to bring about Your will or Your purpose.  You choose to use Your song and Your Word and Moses and Joshua and Israel and because it is Your good pleasure, not Your need, that governs Your choice.

Transcendent – You are apart from Your creation.  You teach me about Your moral attributes.  You definitely teach me about Your anger.  You teach me about what You will do.  You will heap misfortunes on them; You will use Your arrows on them.  You are loving and kind.  You are jealous and wrathful.  You teach me Your are righteous.  You are truthful and faithful.  You teach me of Your compassion and mercy.  You are Sovereign and eternal.  You are good My God and Wise. I Love You My LORD.

Infinite – There are no limits or bounds to Your person or dominion.  There are no limits to generations.  You have created Your creation from the beginning.  You know the years of all generations.  There are no limits or bounds to the number of the sons of Israel.  There are no limits to what You can do or will do.  You are limitless.

Sovereign – It is You I worship.  You are perfect and just and loving and gracious and faithful and good and wise.  You are truthful.  You are jealous and wrathful and righteous and longsuffering and holy.  You teach me about Yourself.  You are in complete control and You are doing Your foreknown plan!

Holy – You are a morally excellent, perfect being.  You separate Moses for Your purpose.  You separate the sons of Israel for Your purpose.  You separate me by Your truth through Your Son for Your Purpose.

Gracious – You show Your favor by giving the nations their inheritance.  You separated the sons of man and set the boundaries of the people according to the number of the sons of Israel.

Merciful – You show Your compassion on Your people by finding me and encircling me and caring for me and guarding me as the pupil of Your eye.

Righteous – You are always right.  You teach the right way not be foolish or unwise.  You teach me Your treasuries are Your ways.

Just – You punish the unrighteous, atone for sin, and reward the righteous who listen to You and obey You.

Longsuffering - You are patient with Your people and slow to anger.

Loving – You love Your people and You take care of them.  Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that hovers over its young, You spread Your wings and caught them, You carried them on Your pinions.

Good – You give Your people a part of Yourself.  You make Your people ride on the high places of the earth, and they eat the produce of the field; and You make them suck honey from the rock, and oil from the flinty rock, curds of cows, and mild of the flock, with fat of lambs, and rams, the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the finest of the wheat – and of the blood of grapes you we they drank wine.

Wise – Take to my heart all the words with which Your word is warning me today, which I shall command my sons to observe carefully, even all the words of this law.  Your wisdom is higher than my wisdom.  Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts.

Truthful - You always speak the truth.  You said You will you’re your face from the, You will see what their end shall be and You did, and You will.

Faithful – You always do what You say.  The Judge of all the earth will deal justly.  Your work is perfect, for all Your ways are just; You are faithful and without injustice.  Faith is not knowing that You can do what You say, but that You will do what You say.

Wrathful - You destroy all unrighteousness.  You will heap misfortunes on them; You will use Your arrows on them.  They shall be wasted by famine, and consumed by plague and bitter destruction; and the teeth of beasts You will send upon them, with the venom of crawling things of the dust.

Jealous – You will not share Your land or Your people who are rightly and morally Yours with any other creature.  Indeed their rock is not like our rock; even our enemies themselves judge this.  For their vine is from the vine of Sodom, and from the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of poison, their clusters, bitter.  Their wine is the venom of serpents, and the deadly poison of cobras.  You, You are God, and their is no god besides You.  It is You who put to death and give life.  You have wounded, and it is You who heal; and there is no one who can deliver from Your hand.

·      Demons are real.  Ps 106:35; Matt 9:33; 1 Cor 10:20; James 2:19; Rev 9:20

·      What or who are the goat demons?

·      Jesus cast out demons – The Word of God, God’s Son, cast out demons.

·      Sacrifice to demons?  2 Cor 6:16; Is 65:11; Gal 4:8

·      What agreement has the temple of God with idols?  For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”

·      However at that time, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no gods.

·      You believe that God is one.  You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.

Incomprehensible – What does ‘call the heavens and the earth to witness against you today’ mean?  Why do You say ‘Give ear, O heavens’?  Can the heavens hear?  The earth is populated who can hear the words of Moses’/Your Mouth?  Is the heavens populated?  Are You talking to Your angels and Your humans?  Don’t angels already know Your words and Your thoughts?  Why do they have to ‘give ear’?  how may I know Your heavens?

Is it You who is speaking or is it Moses?  How is Moses different?  Is it Moses’ teaching drop as rain?  How does teaching drop as rain?  Is it Moses’ speech distilled as the dew or is it Yours?  How does speech distill as the dew?  How is that possible?  How do I let my teaching drop as the rain, and My speech distill as the dew?  What does it mean ‘as the dew, as the droplets on the fresh grass and as the showers on the herb’?  This is a metaphor speech as heavy dew?  Heavy speech?  Abundant speech?  I am so stupid I don’t even know what the metaphor IS MUCH less what it means.

How does Moses proclaim the name of You?  What does it mean to ‘ascribe greatness to our God’?

Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?  You are righteous.  You are always good.  Why are You called the Rock?  You are solid and steadfast.  Why does Moses call You the Rock?  You work is perfect.  I believe that is true but what does it mean?  Youa re perfect, You are holy.  You are just.  All Your ways are just.  What does all of those things have to do with each other?  What does it mean ‘The Rock!  His work is perfect, for all His ways are just’?  I know You are holy and just and faithful and righteous and good.  What does this verse mean?  They all describe You, Your moral attributes.

My LORD, who is ‘they’ and ‘their’?  is it the assembly of Israel?  Who are not Your children?  Is it the assembly of Israel who are not Your children?  Is their defect acting corruptly toward You?  I have their defect My LORD.  I am part of this perverse and crooked generation.  I cannot see or hear or understand or discern You or anything.  I am foolish and unwise.  I believe My LORD.  What does this mean?  What are You teaching me?  Why Your Word My LORD?

I know that Jesus’ sacrifice has bought me, what does this mean?  What does Your Word mean You my Father who has bought me?  Bought me from what?  Bought me for what?  Is it talking about me?  Or am I being vain?

How do I remember the days of old My LORD?  How do I consider the years of all generations?  I can’t ask anyone, there is no one else who will inform me, my elders cannot tell me.  Why do you tell Israel this?  Why is it in your Word?  I only have You to tell me.  How does Moses know to say this?  How does he know what to say?

How do I remember the days of old My LORD?  How do I consider the years of all generations?  I can’t ask anyone, there is no one else who will inform me, my elders cannot tell me.  Why do you tell Israel this?  Why is it in Your Word?  I only have You to tell me.  How does Moses know to say this?  How does he know what to say?

Have You given the nations their inheritance?  Oh, when you do.  How does He remember all of this?  How is Your portion Your people?  What does this mean?  What does Your allotment mean?  How can people be Your inheritance?

Have You found m My LORD?  Do You encircle me and care for me and guard me as the pupil of Your eye?  That is so awesome My LORD!  Have You spread Your wings and caught me and carried me on Your pinions?  I dream of You My LORD.  How may I know?

You alone guide me My LORD.  I trust You, and I believe You.  You are loving and good My LORD.  You are so marvelous.

Do You hide Your face from me?  I am stupid and blind and do not know the difference.

What is my end My LORD?  I am of this perverse generation, sons on whom is no faithfulness.  I don’t even know My LORD.

Are You sorry You made me My LORD?  Do I make You jealous with what is not God?  Do I provoke You to anger?  Do I have idols?  How may I know?  How do I change?

What do all of these things mean?  I believe You.  I believe You will make them jealous and provoke Your people to anger and heap misfortunes on the.  I believe Your misfortunes.  I believe You will use Your arrows on them.  I cannot even imagine all the things You will do but I believe You will.  Why are they in Your song?  How is this a witness against them?  Are not they doing exactly what You want them to?  So that You can do all these things to them?  You are Sovereign.

My LORD, do You fear anything?  Do You fear the provocation by the enemy?  Why do you care?  Do You fear their adversaries should misjudge or they should say “Our hand is triumphant, and You had not done this”?  You are Jehovah God.  Why do You care what they think or say?  You are Omniscient.  Why is it part of Your song?  What are You saying?  What does it mean?  Are You explaining Yourself?  Why, My LORD?

Why is verse 28 separate from verse 27?  Adversaries are a nation My LORD?  Or is it speaking of the sons of Israel lacking in counsel, and there is no understanding in them?  Would that Israel, Your people were wise, that they understood this, that Israel, Your people would discern their future?  Only You and Moses understand.  Only You and Your Word understand this.  Not even Your Holy Spirit can make me understand.

How can I gain counsel?  How can I understand?  How can I be wise, that I understand this, that I can discern my future?

Have You sold Isarel, Your people, have You given them up?  Who are You talking about?  Who are our enemies?  Who are my enemies?  What is the difference between them and me?  Is ‘they’ and ‘their’ Satan and demons and ‘our’ is You and Your people?  What is ‘it’ My LORD?  What is laid up in store with you?  What is sealed up in Your treasuries?

What is vengeance and retribution mean?  Vengeance (n) 1) the return of an injury for an injury, in punishment or retribution; avenging of an injury or offense; revenge 2) the desire to make such a return

·      Retribution (n) – punishment for evil done or reward for good done

You will vindicate Your people and will have compassion on Your servants.  Vindicate – (vt) 1) to clear from criticism, blame, guilt, suspicion, etc; uphold by evidence or argument. 2) to defend or maintain (a cause, claim, etc) against opposition. 3) to serve as justification for; justify [a success which vindicated their belief in him]. 4) to lay claim to or establish possession of (something for oneself or another ). 5) [obs.] a) to avenge b) to punish – Why My LORD?  What do You mean?

Avenge Your people for what My LORD?  Avenge (vt.) – 1)to get revenge for (an injury, wrong, etc.) 2) to take vengeance on behalf of, as for a wrong.

Why is this so hard My LORD?  Do You not want me to know?  Do You not want me to understand?  You are Jehovah God.  You are Omnipotent.

Give ear, O heavens, and let me speak; and let the earth hear the words of my mouth.  Let my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, as the droplets on the fresh grass and as the showers on the herb.  For I proclaim the name of the Lord; ascribe greatness to our God!  The Rock!  His work is perfect, for all His ways are just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He.  They have acted corruptly toward Him, they are not His children, because of their defect; but are a perverse and crooked generation.  Do You thus repay the Lord, O foolish and unwise people?  Is not He your Father who has bought you?  He has made you and established you.  Remember the days of old, consider the years of all generations.  Ask your father, and he will inform you, your elders, and they will tell you.  When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when He separated the sons of man, he set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel.  For the Lord’s portion is His people; Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance.  He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of a wilderness; He encircled him, He cared for him, He guarded him as the pupil of His eye.  Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that hovers over its young, He spread His wings and caught them, He carried them on His pinions.  The LORD alone guided him, and there was no foreign god with him.  He made him ride on the high places of the earth, and he ate the produce of the field; and He made him such honey from the rock, and oil from the flinty rock, curds of cows, and mile of the flock, with fat of lams, and ram, the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the finest of the wheat – and the blood of grapes you drank wine.

But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked – You are grown fat, thick, and sleek – then he forsook God who made him, and scorned the Rock of his salvation.  They made him jealous with strange gods; with abominations, they provoked Him to anger.  They sacrificed to demons who were not God, to gods whom they have not know, new gods who came lately, whom your fathers did not dread.  You neglected the Rock who begot you, and forgot the God who gave you birth.

And the Lord say this, and spurned them because of the provocation of His sons and daughters.  Then he said, ‘I will hide My face from them, I will see what their end shall be; for they are a perverse generation, sons in whom is no faithfulness.  ‘They have made Me jealous with what  is not God; they have provoked Me to anger with their idols.  So I will make them jealous with those who are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation, for a fire is kindled in My anger, and burns to the lowest part of Sheol, and consumes the earth with its yield, and sets on fir the foundations of the mountains.

I will heap misfortunes on the; I will use My arrows on them.  They shall be wasted by famine, and consumed by plague and bitter destruction; and the teeth of beasts I will send upon the, with the venom of crawling things of the dust.  Outside the sword shall bereave and inside terror – both young man and virgin, the nursling with the man of gray hair.  I would have said, “I will cut them to pieces, I will remove the memory of them from men,” had I not feared the provocation by the enemy, lest their adversaries should misjudge, lest they should say, “Our hand is triumphant, and the LORD has not done all this.’”

For they are a nation lacking in counsel, and there is no understanding in the.  Would that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would discern their future!  How could one chase a thousand, and two put the thousand to flight, unless their Rock sold them, and the LORD had given them up?  Indeed their rock is not like our Rock, even our enemies themselves judge this.  For their vine is from the vine of Sodom, and from the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of poison, their clusters, bitter.  Their wine is the venom of serpents, and the deadly poison of cobras.

Is it not laid up in store with Me, sealed up in My treasuries?  Vengeance is Mine, and retribution, in due time their foot will slip; for the day of their calamity is near, and the impending things are hastening upon them.  For the LORD will vindicate His people, and will have compassion on His servants; when He sees that their strength is gone, and there is none remaining, bond or free.  And He will say, ‘Where are their gods, the rock in which they sought refuge?  Who ate the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their libation?  Let them rise up and help you, let them be your hiding place!  See now that I, I am He, and there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life.  I have wounded, and it is I who heal; and there is no one who can deliver from My hand.  Indeed, I lift up My hand to heave, and they say, as I live forever.  If I sharpen My flashing sword ,and My hand takes hold on justice, I will render vengeance on My adversaries, and I will repay those who hate Me.  I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and My sword shall devour flesh, with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the long-haired leaders of the enemy.’  “Rejoice, O nations, with His people; for He will avenge the blood of His servants, and will render vengeance on His adversaries, and will atone for His land and His people.”
